GENERATIONS ACTRESS CHI MHENDE CHASES CHAIRS AT THE MARKET THEATRE
7 July, Johannesburg, Generation’s Actress Chi Mhende has landed a big role in one of the most compelling theatre productions to date, Chasing Chairs at the Market Theatre. Mhende acting alongside theatre veteran Theo Landey. The production opens from the 14th July to 6th August.
Known to her fans as the beautiful and mysterious Wandile on the SABC1 daily soapie Generations, Chi has won hearts of millions of households, portraying a transgendered woman. The storyline sparked a lot controversy while at the same time enlightening the audiences on gender and sexuality.
“Fans will be delighted to see Generation’s Wandile in a super femme heterosexual and completely maternal role.
Chi, who describes herself as a “full on method performer” underwent a gruelling transformation which involved the strapping of her breasts and forgoing months of feminine grooming rituals in order to deliver a body unlike her own and create what Mzansi came to know as a very “pretty, yet sexually confused young MAN”. With this kind commitment and drive, Chi is indeed destined for the stars.
Chi plays Kat in Chasing Chairs, and is very excited about this new role which showcases what she feels will be quite an artistic, vulnerable, feminine and revealing side to herself; a sensitive woman and a sensitive artist.
Born in Zimbabwe, Chi has a very colorful theatre and film resume. She has appeared in productions such as Nothing But The Truth, Special Thanks To Guests From Afar, The Comedy of Errors, Aladdin, Midsummer Night’s Dream and Othello among many others.
A teacher, philanthropist, performance and vocal artist, Chi has all the makings of a superstar. Her hard-work, commitment, zeal and loyalty to her craft makes her portrayal of any role she steps into credulous. Boasting a BA in Live Performance from AFDA, Chi is a formidable entertainer and a force, inspiring both young and old.
Chasing Chairs is a window into the relationship of a refined and artistic couple poised on the cusp of both middle age and a sometimes fragile sense of a shifting of the previous certainties of their lives in a time defined by contestation over the validity of perceptions of truth or reality.
Set against the backdrop of a city and society convulsed by the gestation pains of transformation, Simon and Kat experience their own internal landscapes laid bare as they grapple to comprehend the consequences of an event that will profoundly change the life and routines to which they are accustomed.
The play sparkles with the quick and often peculiar or profane wit of the interchanges that define their domestic sparring, sometimes beautifully connecting, sometimes painfully out of touch with each other’s perspectives. It’s a window on a reality in which many will recognize their own foibles, frustrations and moments of sublime pleasure that are the hallmarks of an intimate relationship with another.
Tickets are available at www.markettheatre.co.za and the show is on from the 14th July to 6th August.
